Housing assistance for single mothers in Arkansas

Are you homeless or living in a substandard housing in the State of Arkansas? As a single mother you would realize how challenging it is to survive in the State of Alaska when faced with the need for shelter particularly for kids. Your low-income simply cannot afford to purchase a decent living house or rent a decent place. It can only help buy basics and cheaper things of which housing is an exception. This is troublesome to single moms.

The fortunate thing is that the State of Arkansas put more efforts in simplifying housing for all residents. The state has realized the onerous burden on single mothers in finding affordable housing and has therefore established assistance programs in this regard. It has Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program and Homeownership program, among others. The programs are provided to very low-income and low-income families.

The assistance programs in the State of Arkansas are administered by public housing agencies which then manage eligibility factors into the program. There are many public housing agencies mainly spread all over relevant counties in the state. That being said, a single mom has to apply via public housing agency to get the benefits of the programs.

Section 8 vouchers are given to qualifying single mothers to look for a suitable housing that they can rent in. The mother has to look for a housing unit that meets the standards of housing as pre-determined by the Housing and Urban Development Department of U.S and adopted by the State of Arkansas. The rent, too, has to be reasonable for the program to approve the dwelling.

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program has limit set already that will allow the recipient of the voucher to pay only 30% of her income. If the unit chosen exceeds the maximum amount of rent allowed, the mother will be liable for paying that extra amount. Nevertheless, under no any circumstances shall the mother be allowed to pay more than 40% of her income.

Once the landlord of the housing chosen for rental agrees to offer the unit to the low-income single mom under this program, contract will be signed by the Landlord and the public housing agency which details the amount that will be paid monthly by the program. The mom is also expected to sign a lease agreement with the landlord. Moreover, the mom is required to pay the 30% she is obliged to pay. If any housing has security deposit, that would be the liability of the recipient of the program.

Single mothers can also use the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program to purchase a new home under the program name Homeownership program. To qualify for the program, you must have not owned the home previously. The program requires concurrent participation in Family Self-sufficiency program. The Homeownership program has a time limit of 15 years.

In order to apply for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program and Homeownership program you need to do that with the public housing agency in your county. Take note of income limits and other qualifying non-monetary factors. There should not be poor credit and criminal records.
